Winter Anime 2016: Shows To Check Out

Baby, it’s cold outside, but what better way to warm the heart than the presence of some engaging brothers and sisters. Here are three series that will be keeping me company in the wintery days ahead.

Dagashi Kashi

Dagashi Kashi title

Kokonotsu Shikada dreams of one day becoming a manga author. His father, the owner of a candy shop in the countryside, however, wants him to take over the family business. Cue one Hotaru Shidare, candy enthusiast and quirky heiress to a world famous candy company. She wants to hire Kokonotsu’s talented father no matter what, but dear old dad refuses to go unless she can convince the stubborn son to take over for him. Well, there’s only one thing to say: Challenge accepted.

My thoughts, based on the classic song by the Strangeloves:

I know a girl, purple-haired and sweet.
She’s so weird she can’t be beat–
Knows every candy that folks desire,
Sets Kokonotsu’s world on fire.

I want candy! I want candy!

Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut (Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle)

Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut (Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle) title

Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle starts five years after the Arcadia Empire fell in a rebellion and was replaced by a new one. The former prince and princess, Lux and Airi Arcadia, are now just regular citizens…at least until he was involved in a mishap with the new kingdom’s princess. Forced to duel as punishment in a magical/mechanical suit known as a Drag-Ride, Lux proves himself a capable Drag-Knight and he ends up attending the ladies-only academy where such knights are trained. The usual action, harem-building and otherwise, ensues.

First, it was Infinite Stratos, then it was Unlimited Fafnir, and now it’s Undefeated Bahamut Chronicle. Yes, the Only Guy Among Girls premise strikes again, which is not necessarily a bad thing. After all, if you enjoyed the others, you’ll like this one and vice versa. Still, I wonder if the next series that uses it will be called Neverending Ifrit?

Schwarzesmarken

Schwarzesmarken title

In an alternate version of Earth history, terrifyingly strong and relentless aliens known as BETA invaded in the early 1970’s and have been steadily pushing humanity closer and closer to extinction. Humans, of course, refuse to go down without a fight, but even with this common enemy, old grievances don’t simply disappear. It is against this backdrop that an East German special forces unit charged with fighting the BETA, the titular Schwarzesmarken, operates. But is winning even possible when they don’t know who the real enemies are?

This is actually a prequel to another anime series called Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse, but watching it beforehand is not required to understand what’s going on since they take place a couple decades apart. If anything, the only thing to know is that we should all be glad the ’70s gave us disco, instead.
